POWERFUL LEADERSHIP LESSONS FOR WOMEN WHO
DON'T GOLF -- ADVICE FOR WOMEN MANAGING OTHERS
Vancouver, BC - Elaine Allison discovered
she needed a different managerial strategy when she became one
of Canada's first female correctional officers to supervise inmates
in an all-male maximum security prison at the age 19. She has
developed an approach for women -- her life depended on it.
Allison counsels women now to be direct
and impactful like a hammer, but combine a velvet approach with
diplomacy, compassion and warmth. She describes this in her book
The Velvet Hammer: "PowHERful Leadership Lessons for Women
Who Don't Golf ($16.95 US / $19.95 CDN, Positive Presentations
Plus Inc.) available at www.thevelevethammer.com
"When we acknowledge and leverage
these differences in how men and women lead - we grow healthier,
stronger organizations and more effective leaders, says Allison
an international speaker, author and corporate trainer.
Simply put, a 'Velvet Hammer' is a woman
who gets things done and done well by leading with grace and eloquence.
She has let go of trying to make what works for her male counterparts,
work for her. Instead, the Velvet Hammer leverages her perspective
as a woman to gain the trust, enthusiasm and support of teams,
while getting things done without feeling she needs to take up
golf.
Research bears out Allison's theme. MRIs
and PET scans comparing men's and women's brain activity clearly
shows men use one side of the brain - great for focus while women
use both - great for multitasking. In addition, different hormones
are secreted into the bloodstream during periods of stress. Men
produce adrenaline - great for action and energy, women produce
oxytocin, used more or bonding and connecting.
Since her baptism by fire over twenty years
ago, Allison moved on to corporate leadership roles which ultimately
defined her effectiveness as at trainer, speaker, successful author
and successful business woman. She won The Visions of Excellence
Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2002. She attributes her success
directly to the "velvet hammer" techniques she shares.
